Transportation Cabinet schedules 2008 motor carrier tax training
Popular training sessions are tailored for smaller firms and owner-operators

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announced that a popular series of tax training sessions for motor carriers will be offered again this year at locations across the state. The training, conducted by the KYTC Division of Motor Carriers, includes instructions designed to assist carriers with accurate and timely online fuel tax filing.

“We are building on the success of the 2007 training sessions,” said Transportation Secretary Joe Prather. “Eighty-nine carriers participated in the training last year and we already have a greater number pre-registered this year. This is hands-on training that is particularly valuable to small companies and owner-operators.”

Six training dates have been scheduled from March through October, with three starting times to choose from on all but one date. Topics covered in each two-hour session include online and electronic tax preparation and filing, uniform carrier registration, Kentucky weight distance tax, and tax return errors.

Online tax filing increased 24 percent after last year’s training sessions. “There are distinct advantages to paying your fuel tax online,” said Commissioner of Vehicle Regulation Dan Glass. “You can count on greater accuracy and speedier processing of your returns. Consequently, carriers will have greater peace of mind, knowing that there is less chance of their fuel tax license being canceled because of mistakes or omissions on the return.” A canceled fuel tax license, in effect, shuts down a carrier. The cabinet’s online system calculates the tax automatically.

“I personally appreciate the Department of Vehicle Regulation for continuing this effort in educating the motor carriers of Kentucky,” said Jamie Fiepke, president of the Kentucky Motor Transport Association. “Many of the carriers do not have the resources to stay current on the constantly changing tax environment. These trainings provide the carriers of Kentucky the opportunity to be educated on the different fuel taxes and talk face to face with key staff members.”

Walk-ins will be welcome, but carriers can reserve seats for the training session by calling 502-564-6401 or online at http://dmc.kytc.ky.gov/
