Governor Beshear participates in the dedication of Specialist Timothy Adam Fulkerson Memorial Highway
Stretch of US 231 in Daviess County being named for fallen soldier

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear joined several state and local officials in Owensboro today for a ceremony naming a section of US 231 in Daviess County in memory of Specialist Timothy Adam Fulkerson, who was killed in action in Tikrit, Iraq.

“Today we remember a young man who valiantly served his country with honor and distinction, as many great soldiers from Daviess County have done for more than 200 years,” said Gov. Beshear. “Timothy Adam Fulkerson was a model soldier who deserves no less recognition than the one we bestow today.”

“Many others from Daviess County and from every corner of this great Commonwealth have put their lives on the line in Iraq and Afghanistan,” continued Gov. Beshear. “They have answered the call to duty, not because they love war or fighting, but because they are willing to stand up for the principles that make our country great. We salute each and every one of them today.”

Spec. Fulkerson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 82nd Aviation Reconnaissance Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Fulkerson was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in June, 2006. He was killed in action by an IED in Tikrit, Iraq.

Spec. Fulkerson was laid to rest with full military honors. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Aviation Crewmember's Badge, and Combat Action Badge.

Born June 18, 1986 in Daviess County, Spec. Fulkerson was a 2004 graduate of Daviess County High School. He enlisted in the United States Army soon after graduation. While a high school student he became a talented artist, who was particularly skilled with the use of graphite. Fulkerson had hoped to further develop his artistic talent in college. The Timothy Adam Fulkerson Memorial Scholarship was created in 2007 at Daviess County High School. The scholarship fund supports one student each year who is seeking a career in art.

“Our prayers are with the family and friends of Specialist Fulkerson,” said Sen. David Boswell (D-Owensboro), who sponsored Senate Joint Resolution 9, which called for the renaming of the road. “This young man stood tall as an exemplary model for every soldier. While serving his country, he paid the ultimate price. Specialist Fulkerson is indeed a hero, and I am grateful for the sacrifice he made for the freedom of all Americans”

US Highway 231 from the Ohio/Daviess County line to the intersection of Burlew Avenue and New Hartford Road in Owensboro will now be known as the “Specialist Timothy Adam Fulkerson Memorial Highway”. Today’s ceremony took place at Deer Park Elementary School on New Hartford Road.
